Every other striped sock in the range runs its bands horizontally. These run vertically, and they are knitted in as raised ribs rather than worked in a second colour.
Because the stripe is a raised knit rather than a colour change, the sock ends up thicker than a flat knit of the same fibre. That is where the warmth comes from.
A high elasticity cuff holds the top. On an extra long sock that is the part carrying the load, and we knit it deep so it holds without digging in.
