L/XL stretches 35 to 51 inches, 2XL/3XL takes 40 to 65, and 4XL/5XL runs 43 to 71. The overlaps are wide, so if you land between two bands the smaller one will hold tighter and the larger will sit more loosely rather than fail.
The clips are metal on an elastic band. Metal grips a knit stocking top more firmly than a plastic clasp, which matters most with the heavier cable knit thigh highs in the range.
82 percent nylon, 18 percent spandex, knitted as a mesh. That is enough to tell you it stretches throughout rather than being a rigid band with elastic panels let into it.
Warm water, mild detergent, gentle rubbing, then a rinse. We do not put a machine cycle on this one anywhere, and with metal hardware sitting on elastic that is deliberate.
